ENERGY
In physics the definition of energy is: The capacity to do work. There are two basic kinds of energy: kinetic energy and potential energy. Kinetic energy is by virtue of the motion of an object and potential is by virtue of the position of an object. Let me explain: if an object is held above the ground then it has potential energy that it has the potential to do work. If then this object is dropped then this potential energy becomes kinetic energy as the object is moving. When it reaches the ground then this energy is released as heat and sound and so this is described as the work done. Another example is a clock spring. We expend energy by winding the spring. This energy is then stored in the spring and thus becomes potential energy which then is converted back to kinetic energy as the hands move. In the electric clock electrical energy is stored in the battery and is therefore potential energy in other words it is ready for use. This energy is then converted back to kinetic energy as the hands move.
We will now briefly look at electrical energy, as I believe that this is at the heart of our energy transmissions. Whilst there is an open circuit the electrical energy in the wires can be described as potential energy, but once something is connected in the circuit then this energy is converted into work. Whether this be an electric motor or a TV, computer, light a bulb, heat an electric fire etc for example. Now let us briefly look as to where does this energy come from? It has mostly come from the sun. The main exceptions the exceptions being geothermal energy which originates deep within the earths crust- mainly from nuclear fission of radioactive elements within the crust. And of course nuclear power stations are the other exception. (Looked at in another way all this energy has had its origins at the beginning of the Universe, that moment when Time itself came into being)
Wind, wave and hydroelectric power- all the energy has ultimately originated from the sun. The burning of fossil fuels is the process where energy which came from the sun was stored in the earth as oil, coal and gas millions of years ago. I will refer to this again shortly once I have explained a little about photosynthesis.
And so we will look into the primary sources of energy in the universe. The energy which we use in our lives and homes has been transformed into a form that it can be harvested by man. The sun is basically a huge nuclear fusion reactor, where hydrogen atoms fuse together to form helium in doing so energy is released. This is as you will probably know is the principal of the hydrogen bomb. This energy is released as heat and light and when it reaches the earth, it is responsible for the weather, the winds and the whole life cycles and the very existence of the planet as we know it. Without it life on earth as we know it would not exist.
The most important factor in making the energy usable by man and all other creatures on the planet is the green plant. By the process of photosynthesis the sun’s energy in the form of light and heat is turned into carbohydrates and sugars which ultimately become the source of energy for all animals. Herbivores eat the plants and use the carbohydrates. The carbohydrates in the plants when consumed by animals are converted usable energy and into other complex carbohydrates, fats and proteins by various biochemical reactions all powered by the mitochondria in the cells. Much of this energy of course is converted to work, i.e. movement and the operation of muscles and all bodily functions etc. Energy I hope that you can now see is transferred from the sun to all of us and everything we do comes to us via the plant - animal food chain.
Fossil
fuels? As I mentioned earlier, energy from the sun arrives to the
earth in the form of heat and light. Green plants use
this energy in the process of photosynthesis to combine
water and carbon dioxide to form complex carbohydrate
molecules as mentioned earlier. These processes have been taking place for
millions of years and when the
remains of plant and animal
life have been buried deep within the earth over these
millions of years then all
will slowly lose the elements
oxygen and most of the
nitrogen. The oxygen is generally lost in the form of
water, (H2O). What we are left with is a complex mixture
of hydrocarbons - natural gas and crude oil.
Plant remains generally form coal.
Thus when we burn these
fossil fuels we are using the sun’s energy which came
to earth millions of years ago.
Electricity
is a very important form of energy, not only
in our daily lives, but as a part of our very existence.
To understand the importance of
electricity as a part of our human existence, we must first of all say a little
and understand as to what
electricity is.
When considering this form of
energy it is difficult to imagine modern man, surviving
without it! What is electricity? That unseen
energy that can so quickly kill us
if not treated carefully and
on the other hand can bring us
back to life again after a heart has stopped? In its simplest terms it is
the potential energy which exists between negatively
charged and positively
charged particles. An
atom is composed of positively
charged protons and negatively
charged electrons, together with a number of
other sub-atomic particles
which we need not discuss here. An atom
is said to be in its neutral state
when in has an equal number
of electrons and protons. If some of the electrons
are removed then it becomes positively
charged. It requires an energy
input to change an atom’s
state from being neutral to either a positively charged ion or a negatively
charged ion. For
example a static electric charge
can be attained by rubbing a
glass or ebony rod
with a piece of dry silk. The rod
then becomes electrically
charged because the rubbing of the
rod removes electrons from the atoms one of the surfaces and transfers them to
the other. For example the rod may lose electrons which are
gained by the silk then the rod
becomes positively charged and the silk becomes negatively charged and if the
two are then brought back close together
again then a spark will form between the two. Have you ever taken off your shirt
on a cold dry evening and seen the sparks and heard the crackles
– then this is exactly the same
effect. There is thus a potential
difference between the two materials. This
is an electric charge. The
greater the number of electrons removed the
greater the charge and potential difference.
The greater the imbalance then the greater the electric charge. When there is a
flow of electrical charge –
it is usually the electrons which flow, in a circuit for example then an
electric current is said to be generated. This is usually measured in amperes.
The flow may be in a single direction as from a battery then the current is
called direct current (DC) or if this flow alternates backwards and forwards
then it is said to be an alternating current (AC). The flow of current is always
between a high potential and a low potential (i.e. the potential difference.)
When an electric current flows down a wire then the atoms in the wire are
continually losing and gaining electrons as the charge moves down the wire.
As previously noted, there are several ways in which electricity can be generated (1) from the fossil fuels, which has ultimately come form the sun. (2) From the energy produced during nuclear fission (3) from an electrochemical reaction – as in a battery and (4) by a direct conversion of heat or light via a photovoltaic cell or thermocouple. (5) The so called renewable resources – Hydroelectric, wind power and wave power. For all of these methods, except the nuclear fission, it is the sun which is the ultimate source of the power. We are using the sun’s energy to convert it by various means for our own use. Nuclear fission relies on elements which were formed right at the beginning of the Universe. Although if we look at it this way then everything we are, everything in the Universe all goes back to the moment in time, the singularity when time itself began and all the elements therein. All our atoms, each and every one of them all go back to that single event billions of years ago, sorry I digress a little. But it is a sobering thought isn’t it.?
Let us now look at ourselves. Electrical currents are an integral part of our existence, without it, I doubt that we could be a living breathing, moving and reproducing entity.
Our electricity is generated by chemical reactions in the cells, using energy from the food we eat. The food we eat is an energy store which if you think about it is a little bit of the sun’s energy trapped in on a plate!! Special cells in the body called mitochondria convert the food into energy in a form which can be used by our bodies. The movement of muscles, the operation of nerves, all our organs, and of course our brains. Electrical currents are generated travel along nerve fibres and tell our muscles what our brains ask them to do.
The electrical
impulses are generated by electro-chemical
reactions in the body and sometimes
in the case of the electric eel for example can be
several thousands of volts. But in most cases
within our bodies the voltages
and currents are very small but they can be
detected nevertheless.
Central to the control is of course the brain which
has been likened to a very powerful computer. Along
with the normal and necessary functions of the
body, electrical fields are central to the
area of emotions and in saying this I can
encompass a whole wide range of topics,
which should become clearer as I proceed.
Let up first of look at the phenomenon
which we call our aura. It is said to be a
visual manifestation of our emotions, and
can be detected by sensitive scientific
instruments and by people who are sensitive
and tuned into it. When an emotion occurs
then the brain is sending all sorts of electrical
impulses along the nerves to various points of
the body. There are of course very many examples of this;
if we are embarrassed for example then
we can end up with a red face. This physical
response is due to nerves carrying signals
from the brain in response to the event.
These very same signals which manifest themselves as a physical response can
also show up as what we call our aura which can change colour according to our
emotional responses at a particular moment in time. Now
in the physical world when electric currents flow
along a wire an
electromagnetic field is generated and can easily
be detected some distance away so why
should it not be so from our own electric fields?
This then you can see is a form of energy
which is radiating from a person which
then can be picked up and even absorbed by another
person, when standing nearby. If a person is
happy and smiling then people nearby become
infected, i.e. they are picking up this
energy field. How many times have you walked
into a room full of people and you have known that
someone is sad and unhappy for instance? The Laws of physics says that
the further
away you are from the source then the weaker
is the energy field. I have a feeling
that the
it is an exponential relationship with distance
rather than a linear one. Thus the higher
the emotional state whether
it be negative or positive then
the greater will be the distance it
will travel unaided. And the
more sensitive the person who can
pick up these emotions then the
greater will be the distance from the
source these
energies can be
picked up. What
form are these energies being transmitted
in? Personally I believe that
it is by some form of electromagnetic radiation
like a radio wave which is basically is
where energy is transmitted from the radio
transmitter in the form of alternating
or pulsing charged particles.
Light is also a form of electromagnetic radiation
where the particles
are known as photons. What form the human
energy transmissions are in I am not sure, but whatever
form they are in, they certainly do exist.
Sometimes you can almost “taste”
an atmosphere where people’s emotions are
so highly charged. The more people involved
then it would appear that they energies
being radiated are collectively added together.
Even so if there were any scientific instrument
sensitive to actually measure this energy in
the standard energy unit for electromagnetic radiation –
the electron-volt (eV) then the actual
figures would be extremely small,
so the actual conversion into “work”
would be again
extremely small. However in human terms when
a sensitive person picks up these energies
then it can invoke in its turn a very highly charged
emotional response.
Now it would appear that these emotional energies, which I find to be a good description, can travel over huge distances in this modern world of ours. It appears also that they can be recorded by rocks and stones in buildings and that they can be detected hundreds of years later by again very sensitive receptive people under the right conditions – and be manifested as ghosts, apparitions, “feelings about a certain place” I think that many of us will have experienced these. My theory is that these emotional energies can be stored in quartz crystals. If pressure is applied to the faces of a quartz crystal then this energy can be stored by the crystal and when the pressure is released the energy is released again in the form of an electrical spark. This effect is known as the peizo-electric effect. So is it not unreasonable to suppose that quartz will not be able to store these emotional responses and then release them again under certain conditions? I have referred elsewhere on how very special the mineral quartz is.
My belief is that when these emotional energies travel over large distances, they can somehow be carried or latch on to modern media transmissions like radio and TV. And the Internet. We have in the past discussed the subject of the “Emotions of the Internet” In a way I cannot explain or even try to prove these emotions can be relayed from one person to another. All these media use electricity and radio waves, all forms of electromagnetic radiation so is it not unreasonable for an emotional response energy to latch onto and be carried “piggy-back” for huge distances and be picked up again by a sensitive person. And this is what I think is happening with all the negative energies emanating form this current war in Iraq. I wonder – if there was no media there, no radio, no TV, no reports and we did not know what was happening, a war there even, how many people would be able to pick up the collective negative energy emanating from the area? Actually I believe that there are some people that would be able to, may not know what was wrong but would certainly know that something was wrong. How the human brain and psyche can do this, I really have no idea. We have so much to learn.. and sometimes I think that our ancient ancestors were far more in tune than we ever shall be. Our modern lifestyle seems to be atrophying our abilities in these areas.
